A look to Former Times From a Special Window
Comparable to an actual window to the past of Cuyo region, the museum of the "Pasado Cuyano" exhibits precious objects and written documents that have witnessed every moment in the lives of the people of Mendoza, San Juan and La Rioja during the 19th century.
The Cuyo Past Museum, after named Doctor Edmundo Correas, was opened May 24th, in 1967. It was intended to be a place to make the regional history visible for the following generations. Nowadays, the Board of Historical Studies is in charge of this institution, and it is settled in a building declared historical national monument, as it used to belong to Francisco Civit, a former governor of the province of Mendoza.
This museum is rather big. It spreads over sixteen rooms and four courtyards. When walking through them, History seems to come to life into the diverse environments, evoking historical moments of Cuyo region. Antique furniture, pictorial works, text files and objects are some of the tickets for the train to the 19th century in this part of South America.
History comes to life in this museum, objects and documents from the past remain intact and tell a lot about the lives of their former owners. That is such a valuable information, a precious testimony from other times, which will be treasured by investigators nowadays and the generations to come in Cuyo region.
One of the many rooms of the Cuyo Past Museum is the archaeological one, next to a lounge about the development of oil industry in Mendoza. The artillery room, the Unitarios and Federales´ hall and the Independencia room are not as visited as the chamber dedicated to Liberator Gral. San Martin, where an exact replica of his curved saber can be found.
Besides, it should be mentioned that there is a giant library inside the museum, which contains more than 5000 books and a huge periodicals, and also a great deal of files and documents about Mendoza and its occupants.
When staying at the Executive Hotel in Mendoza, a tour around the Cuyo Past Museum is strongly recommended. You will get a close insight about the bases of one of the most important and influent people in this region of Latin America.
